The trusty Citabria is getting an engine overhaul, prop overhaul, bigger tires, upgraded tailwheel suspension and an Angle of Attack indicator! Excited to have a "Super Citabria" ready to go for Basic Tailwheel and Off-Airport Tailwheel coming soon!
Now taking reservations starting in December of 2024.
What You Get:
The tailwheel course includes up to 4-10 hours of dual instruction flight time, and 1-2 hours of ground instruction, training booklet and a shirt! At least one lesson we will hit up 3-4 grass strips and discuss basic STOL techniques. Pending a CFI approval, you'll receive your tailwheel endorsement!
What You'll Learn:
Taxiing, Normal Takeoff, Three Point Landings, Wheel Landings, Crosswind Landings, Basic Maneuvers, Emergency Operations, and How to Avoid Ground Looping.
What You'll Do:
All of it! I'll be right there with you - but you'll tackle all of the topics needed for a tailwheel endorsement. Weather permitting, we'll hit up some grass strips and have a little fun along the way.
* Estimated Cost * If more time is needed to achieve the FAA standards and/or address safety concerns, additional time requested will be hourly @ $240/hr (includes airplane, fuel and instructor) *
What You Get:
The advanced off-airport tailwheel course typically takes 5-10 hours of dual instruction flight time, and 2 hours of ground instruction. An initial ground lesson will be completed and then pre and post flight ground training will be completed for most flights. This will be primarily grass strip flying with at least one riverbed adventure (conditions permitting).
What You'll Learn:
Landing Area Inspection Techniques, Energy Management, Slow Flight, STOL Techniques, Touch Down Precision, Setting Go/No-Go Points for Landings & Takeoffs, Canyon Turns, Wind and Slope Considerations, Provisions/Tools/First Aid/Shelter.
What You'll Do:
You'll review landing areas, plan usable runway distances, develop plans to safely inspect and if possible, land. You'll spend time flying slow, managing energy and hitting touchdown spots consistently. You'll learn how to stop short(er) after touch down and how to lift off earlier in ground effect. You'll be able to safely choose, inspect, land and go around with precision.
We keep the Citabria @ KGDJ (Granbury, TX) and fly in the surrounding area.
My name is Jeremy Harris. I live in Granbury and I'm a CFI - more importantly, I absolutely love flying anything, but especially tailwheel airplanes! I've been at this "aviation thing" for 11 years and I love teaching!
Whenever we can find time. Weekdays or Weekends are possible - whatever works for both of us.
Typically, I think at least 3-4 sessions is best (4-6 hours total). Some people require or request more time - and that's totally fine! Each person is different, and I'll work with your goals. Typically, around 8-10 hours in a specific make/model people start to feel comfortable enough to rent and fly solo in a tailwheel airplane.
Goal number 1 is that you're a safe and confident aviator.
Fill out the form below, email me, or Facebook - whatever works best for you. I'm super responsive - you won't wait long to get a reply.
I fly in a Citabria (7KCAB) - but if you want to fly in your own plane, we can discuss that as well.
For primary training (getting your PPL), we'll use a rental 172 from Granbury Aviation Services.
Absolutely! We can do it in your plane or mine and we can discuss the details based on your exact situation.
Certainly! If you're a CFI and you want to give tailwheel endorsements, then I'll make sure you're a pro. It takes 10-15 hours as we'll have you flying from the back seat after your endorsement and running through various scenarios to train on and be aware of while instructing so that you can safely instruct from the back seat like a veteran.
Let's do it! I charge $240/hour and it is a 2 hour minimum. I only have 1 seat available (with weight restrictions). There are some restrictions per the FAA and we can discuss those depending on exactly what you want to do.
Absolutely! We'll use a rental Cessna 172 from Granbury Aviation Services (https://gasmaint.com). We'll work in your tailwheel endorsement as part of your primary training. You'll earn your PPL as well as a Tailwheel endorsement and you'll have much better "stick and rudder" skills than most new pilots out there!
No pressure at all. If you are ready to go or just want to chat about it more - drop me a note by clicking the button below.
